Slate is a material that needs to be cut and chipped into size either by hand, or by machinery, and sometimes there is a significant amount of waste involved in the process. One of the biggest perpetrators seems to be large paving slabs – due to their large size, and particular shapes, there are a lot of large cuts involved in their manufacturing. There are many ways that the slate waste is used, but I’m only going to list three, as I don’t want this post to get too long.
One may ask, what is a patio slab? A slab is a block consisting of a thick piece of a material. This block shape makes it easier to be installed. One can install block by block the patio, as a gradual process, which makes the installation cheaper. Traditionally patio slabs used to be considered the ones which were made out of concrete to form a less expensive and yet functional patio space. This type of patio was cheaper because concrete is less expansive than other materials like the ostentatious stones used for paving a patio.
Most homemakers prefer to use the pre-made slabs. The simple reason why people choose these slabs is because they are less expensive and yet maintain the same beauty quotient. Also the maintenance of these paving slabs is much simpler and easier. The main disadvantages of using concrete are because they chip and crack. The other major disadvantage of using concrete is the due to the ability of concrete to stain easily. With bust schedules and lifestyles people prefer easy to maintain gardens.
Having a paving slab in the court yard of your lovely home may be one of your dreams. Very often this is quite an expensive venture and the cost is the main culprit that prevents most people from installing this in your home.
